Here is a cuppa love

“Do come over for a cup of coffee..” I love the instant warmth these simple words brings into life, just like coffee. As much as I cannot deny this invitation, I cannot deny the coffee charm in my life.

Coffee started running in my veins since early childhood when all our weekends were at our hometown. “Zai, kappi kudichal karuthu povuutto [You’ll become darker if you drink coffee]”. My cousins never left a chance to tease anyone. I hesitantly sipped the black drink. The taste, smell and the fun we had then, was so refreshing. Just like the coffee.

Years later when Bru was was introduced, our mornings became more aromatic and instantly energized. On days when college was dispersed earlier than usual, we would collect all our bare minimum savings to buy 2 coffees and the famous beetroot cutlet [Courtesy: Indian Coffee House]. The coffee would go round the table, so did the laughter. The freshly ground coffee smells heavenly, so are those memories.

Freshly brewed coffee and hot sambar vada always topped the favorite food list from Chennai days. Strong filter coffee is a pure bliss!! The friendship too!!

When me or bro fell sick then, Amma used to run and make chukkukappi. The dash of spice and sweetness that slipped down and immediately relieved sore throat. This flavorful drink is full of nostalgia and goodness of dry ginger. I bet all 80s kids would still have it as the first home remedy for sore throat even now.

During earlier days of client visits when restaurant menus were too complicated , I accidentally met cold coffee. Like they say, some accidents are beautiful. Revolution of Cafe coffee day and endless hrs on coffee talks continued.

Espresso, Latte, Cappucino, Americano.. List of varieties and flavor of coffee is endless. Coffee blended so fast in our lives – Ice creams, cakes and my darling Tiramisu.. The twist that the bitterness of coffee adds to the sweetness of home made desserts is exotic.

Coffee is not just coffee anymore. Its about the fun we had, the love we shared, the happiness that went around the table and the memories full of aroma that is added to the sweet and spicy life….

Dear coffee, I love you.

Dear friends, Do come over for a cuppa coffee.

… what everyone are up to nowadays, esp when it comes to naming their kids. Short, beautiful, different and uncommon are few of the criteria. And why not? Our little darlings definitely deserve their public identity to be unique .But sometimes, the race behind uniqueness yields a different result.

‘Z’ is the trend of the season. Most of the newly born girls are christened  Zahra,Zehra,Zaira,Zaara,Saira,Saara,Sarah…and sometimes Ziyan for a change.

Bollywood influence cannot be neglected either. After Fiza(the movie) released, the girls were – Fiza, Fida or Farah. And ever since Fanaa(the movie) all the newly born boys are baptized Ryan,Rayan,Rayyan,Rehan,Rehaan,Reyhaan and other variations of these. This season has not ended so far and is likely to continue until such a subtle yet beautiful name comes in another movie. No doubt this is a beautiful name and I too wanted to name my boy the same. But I was late to marry and lots of them in my age had noticed the name,so by the time we had a baby the name had become too common.Luckily we had a girl,so it wasnt tough.

Back at my hometown, all my Hindu friends have their girls named as Gowri or Gayathri. Most of the hansome lil ones are Aditya, Adarsh or Abhinav.

Just cant stop imagining a class of Zahra’s and Rehan’s and Gowri’s filling the attendance sheet 🙂

‘Z’ is what my name begins with, and it gave me lotta troubles at school.Wait patiently till the 89th call for attendance, wait another 2 more weeks for the text book stock would be over by the 80th student, and so and so..But I always loved my name going Zzzzzz 🙂

My relatives chose their twins the rhyming names – Diya and Dua.Very pretty names as much as the kids are.But it didnt stop the parents. To avoid confusion at home, they chose two nicknames – Chikku and Jikku 🙂 Yeah!!That indeed avoids confusion. Another couple has named their kids Zahra(girl) and Zahran(boy). There is a commotion when they are called as no one knows who is being addressed 🙂

A beautiful girl I met at the mall nearby was named Maha.I had not come across the name before, and was curious about the meaning.Did some googling. It meant Wild Cow with large eyes 🙂

A girl friend and her bro were born on April and October respectively and are named Aprilmol and Octobril 🙂 Easy right?

Note:I mean no offense to anyone. All the names above are marvelous. But if it has hurt you in some way, please forgive.

Time,Reason,Blog and the Prestigious Tag…..

I feel its been years since I scribbled something here. Honestly, there wasnt a single day when I did not think about it. But the job had been taking up too much of my time, that by the time I am back, it would be time to call it a day. But here I am having a 2 weeks break. TIME…

The old Compaq laptop. 6 yrs was too good a lifetime. The poor 60GB hard disk roared like a hummer most of the time.Charge stayed hardly for 15 mins and we had confirmed his time was near 🙂 We had been hanging on for no reason.Buying another was always there behind the mind. And yesterday out of the blue,we decided to go out and accidentally came across the clearance sale at Sharaf DG. Acer Aspire 5742G for a luring buy. 500AED lesser than the normal price. With a single piece remaining in the offer,we didnt have time to think and so, here I am happily posting this from this sleek and stylish fella. 🙂

The only thing remaining was a reason to write. Bhavia gave me one.The ABC award. Thank you dear.

Time, reason and the right equipment.I cant ask for more…..

But the award does not come that easy. She would let me take the award only if I fulfill the pre requisites. One of them would be naming the alphabet ceremony. I certainly wouldnt take time as much as Abhishek did to name his beti 🙂

And then for the Eleven’s tag, the rules are laid forth

1. You must post the rules.

2. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.

3. Tag eleven people and link to them on your post.

4. Let them know you’ve tagged them!

Bhavia wouldnt let me pick the tag if I do not answer her 11 questions. So here you go…

1)How did you start blogging?

This is the best way to start the tag cos Zradar has Bhavia as its god mother 🙂

2)Is there any post in your blog which made you cachinnate/cry while writing it?

I was in tears while writing, while reading and then again when i reread – The Best Thing about marriage

3)Are you romantic?Prove with explanations

Definitely yes, esp when it comes to husbands birthdays and our anniversaries. Candles all over the house, cuddly toys, heart shaped balloons and cakes, surprise gifts. You can count on me for romantic birthday ideas.

4)What is your dream possession and why?

Harley-Davidson. Told you girl, I am the roady type.

5)A movie character which you have empathized?

Chris gardner (portrayed by WIll Smith) in Pusuit of Happyness

6)One simple dish, with recipe, which you know to cook apart from Maggi noodles and egg omelet?

Vermicelli Rolls – An arabic sweet. This recipe is simple, too simple though not made in the authentic way.

Crush a packet of Vermicelli (the thinnest strands available) roast the same in ghee. When turned golden, add milkmaid and switch off the stove.Mix thoroughly. Roll then into small balls, and press individual balls onto the lid of a plastic container after layering crushed pista on the bottom of the lid. Turn the lid upside down and take the balls out which has now taken the shape of the lid (sort of small cylinder if lid is round). Refrigerate for an hr or two and serve as dessert.

When guests come without prior intimation, this is often helps.

7)Have you fooled anyone or vice versa?

The vice versa part has happened quite a lot.One of them being Blonde Moments

8)Which is your close to heart sound track and why?

This is the first song husband sang for me and therefore.

9)Which book are you reading now?

To be honest, nothing right now. After I became a huge fan of Freakonomics, have bought Super Freakonomics.

10)Your favorite woman and why?

Tough,..Amma is my all time favorite. Next would be me.

11)What effort do you make in your life to make India a better place to live?

Have sponsored the education of a few girls from remote villages of India. Courtesy World Vision India.

It is time for passing the tag. I have picked my favorites once again. Some of you would have already been tagged with this award, but let me still do the award ceremony.

MyOnlineJournal,Smitha,CraftyShines,Pins and Ashes,Raji,IndianMuslim,Padmapriya,Deepak Karthik,Joshi,OMC,leckerandyummyrecipes,…..

And my questions. This is fun now 🙂 😉

9) Staying with In-laws is like……

10) What change does parenthood bring into your life?

11) Are you able to remember your grocery shopping list by heart without making the list?

Moi made them :-)

After shifting,we noticed that Pari’s toys occupied an unreasonable amount of space.ORGANIZE remained the only choice left 🙂 And guess what? I proved to be good at that 🙂 🙂

Well, storage boxes and fancy racks were available in plenty but seemed out of budget. So I had to come up with something. Too many cartoons from the shifting were yet to be disposed and thats when I tried to convert one of them into a storage bin.

No professional look you should expect.Am an amateur in arts and crafts 🙂 Still looks good to me. Mmmm. Not bad actually. The best part – Cost is 1/10th of the ones in market. Just a few gift wrappers and an hour of your day is all you need. Style than cash,if you call it so.. 🙂

And now that I have started the new year with some recycling, I just hope it continues and the house remains organized.

With this virus spreading far and wide, husband was enjoying different versions this morning and daughter dancing to the tunes. Dealing with english accent…

With people from different countries residing together, English is the common language here.As long you do not know Arabic, Chinese, Philippini and the variety of Indian languages (Hindi/ Malayalam/ Telugu/ Tamil/ Bengali ….), you have to stick to English. Fortunately CUSAT has influenced my Hindi/Bengali skills. Needless to say, Chennai IT companies have brimfully brilliant Telugus,Tamil and mallus 🙂 🙂 So I can deal with Indian languages. But when the ones I meet do not know any of these as much as I do not know theirs, we choose English. The mother tongue influence on English would end up confusing most of the time.

After enrolling for driver’s license test, I had to clear a theory paper which wasn’t a big deal at all. Anyone would get through. So after the exam, I went to the invigilator to collect my result, and he said, “You fail”.WHAT??? No way. I look at him again and see an impatient him shouting, “You fail. Please collect your belongings and leave.Next in queue…”.I collect my mobile and then he hands over the result along with my file which says I have only 2 wrong answers, and I realize he said, “Your FILE”.What a relief..

Neighbour Egyptian anty is fond of Pari. She mixes Arabic and English together to help us understand better, but ahem… Being my mother’s age,we give her due respect and visit whenever possible. Pari is her adorable darling. During one such visits she asked “Ul-Zatayam baby crying, Why?”.I stood perplexed trying to figure out Ul-Zatayam, while her hands went round and round to comprehend, repeating “Ul-Zatayam,Ul-Zatayam”..  All the while at her home, I was trying to decipher Ul-Zatayam, when she asked, “How are your parents – Fazer,Mazer?”. So ‘Z’ was for ‘th’ and then it suddenly struck. Ul-Zatayam, Ul tha tayam – All the time. “All the time baby crying, why?”.Poor thing!!

So we have to learn and deal with not only British English and American English, but also Chinese English,Philippino English (though I cannot tell who belongs to which country,I can tell after they talk),Arabic English,Egyptian English,Turkish English etc etc… But that’s all fine. Mother tongue gets mixed up with foriegn languages.Natural.

But sometimes people create the fake English accent and totally twist my senses. Long back in mid 2005, when we were at Brighton, our team planned for a Swiss trip. Exactly on the day before the trip,London bomb blasts happened and therefore heavy police checking prevailed at all airports. After landing at —— airport, a police man asked my colleague why we were visiting Swiss, and my colleague answered with heavily accented English. “We are tourists, sir”. His Tamil and English emphasized the word ‘tourist’ too much that the police man asked again. “What terrorist?” :- ) 🙂 There stood our horrified colleague, but oh!! What a lovely joke it was for us. From then till now (6 yrs) he is been referred to as Terrorist 🙂 🙂

Ssshh…Here is a secret,..

“Sssshh…Here is a secret.But wait…errr..!You are a girl,I can’t tell you”…What an INSULT!!!

An average women cannot keep secret for longer than 47 hrs, a news study says. Read it here.

I have been hearing this for long. According to the theory, guys generally talk about hi funda stuffs, cars and bikes, computers, good looking girls, social affairs and other ‘non-personal’ matters and are therefore supposed to hold secrets. Girls talk a lot, mostly gossip and therefore can’t hold one. Well, there are some women who have a sudden urge to discuss about anything they hear, but please don’t generalize. Having considerable numbers of friends – both boys and girls – I know people of both genders who can keep secrets and the ones who would spill the beans. Me? I swear if someone has told me a secret, I can keep it as a secret to my grave.

But people mistake me for lots…Reason? I am sociable, friendly and cordial. And on a general opinion, people who fall in this category, cant keep secrets… BIL was shifting to a new house and wanted to surprise his parents. Says he believe everyone will keep it, but not me. Arey bhaiyyaaa… He is half as social as I am.But social people are sensible too. They know what to talk, what not to. I do not need a label like that..

I have kept secrets for long, pretended that it never existed, lied when asked about it and refused politely when forced to. It needs will power to do that. I have even denied my ears to juicy secrets to the fear of spilling them. Yes, I love gossip but I do not want to hurt people. I respect others privacy as much as I respect mine. I respect others information as much as I do to mine.

If one confides, I can zip my mouth. But if one just communicates, how the hell am I supposed to know it is not to be conveyed – unless it is about love, affair, marriage, pregnancy, illness or some other serious note that is likely to cause harm to you or others? X was on leave for a day in office. He came back and told that he was on a trip to his friend’s home.So when someone inquired I said the same. Now he comes and questions why I went around and told everyone everything?WHAT#?#??$??$?$He reacts to this incident by putting his girls friend’s picture in a social networking site and I am certified as the owner of a loose tongue. I dint even knew about his affair. Its been 3 yrs,I still am not clear where I went wrong.

So I am social and while talking, silly matters like X went for a movie which was a flop and still had lots of fun would be passed on. I wouldn’t have known that X had not taken Y,and not told W about it.So again,I am a ‘No Covert’ material. Then why on the first hand did you tell me this? And once told why dint you tell it was not to be told?

A secret is not a secret anymore once told. And if you want to keep it a secret, either keep it to yourself or choose the ‘to-be-told-person’ carefully…No more GENERALISATIONS!! No more BLAMING!!

Do you have a role model???

All the job interviews that I attended had this question. It made me want to run away, not because I din’t have an answer, but because my answer was different from the usual. The question was simple,”Who is your role model?”.Oh!!This one has been following me for long – To start with school, then friends, then interviews, then office meetings, … So out of compulsion I bluffed

Well, all my friends had one. Some had genuine reasons, while some of them made it up (just like me). All of them had their own reasons for the choice, and most of them made sense.

–         One who make us think and possess the qualities that we would like to have

–         One from whom we could draw inspiration to be a better individual

–         One who help others and make time for others

–         One who do the things we want to do and bring our dreams close to reality

–         One who evidently made a difference and stand out in the crowd

–         One who shows a healthy behaviour and respected by the society

–         One who says and do what they say,…..

There were celebrities, politicians, writers, teachers, athletes, and heroes from the history. But it need not necessarily be a known figure too, for a huge percentage, chose their own parents. And why not? Fathers who expresses love to the family, help children deal with tough choices and keeps communication open…Mothers who talks about values and morals, assist children with pressure at school, treat them as adults and taught them how to love their own children……

My heart is happy, my mind is free. I had a father who talked with me” – Hilde Bigelow

To me, anyone who influenced me to make a right decision in life was a role model.

Amma’s persistence was one of them. Atha showed how to lead even when the whole world conspires against you – Will Power. Brother was explicitly simple yet could easily convince others. Husband instilled the confidence that my voice is very strong. He is a true Sales man 🙂 My best friend is a living example of  how one can balance the serious and lighter side of life. He taught that laughter is the best medicine to make your day. There were many other qualities – Resilience, Enthusiasm, Optimism, Candidness, Tolerance, Free-Thinking – that influenced me, but all from different individuals, who got into a noticeable positions through struggles, gathered a lot of experience through their journey, willing to help you with passionate advices and help you get to where they are now…

“If I am walking with two other people, each of them will serve as my teacher.I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate them, and the bad points of the other and correct them in myself” – Confucius

But there are lot of people who has and believes that it is important to have one role model in life….

“The Los Angeles County Department of Health Service conducted a study in 2002 to “examine the relationships between role model characteristics, psychosocial functioning and health-risk behaviors.” The results showed that 56 percent of the adolescents identified with role models. Those who identified with role models they knew personally showed higher levels of self-esteem and stronger academics”. Read more:

And here is wiki helping you to choose yours –

But what do you think? Is it important to have one? Who is your role model?

So..Do you believe in FATE?

Office coffee times are amazing, gossipping mostly 🙂 But sometimes we hit on rather serious topics, and one such question – whether we believe in fate?

Fate,Destiny,Life and God are closely associated.Being a firm believer of Islam,I believe in the supreme power above us.But still when people ask whether I believe in fate,I wonder whether I do.Problem is everyone has their own concepts about all of these.

You may hold fate responsible for your failure, but take the credit yourself over the victory. Doesn’t make sense, right?

We say that everything, both good and bad things happen for a reason. But if God wanted to, he could stop all the bad things.Everyone in this earth would believe in him,and continue living as he wants. There would be no terrorists or rapists or prostitues. Nobody would go to hell. Infact there wouldn’t be any need of a hell if everything goes so smooth. Fortunately or unfortunately that’s not how it is. He has created all of us different – in looks, thoughts and talents. He has blessed all of us with the ability to understand and reason, with enough knowledge to differentiate good and bad, right and wrong.

Having said all that,I still think there are certain things in life which are beyond our control.

I never had the guts to admit my first crush. My first love was crumbled for whatever reason it may be.My first engagement turned bitter and later collapsed. There was lot of depression on my love life, but I did realise that these were not the right men for me when I finally got married to a wonderful man,…

But marriage is not a blessing for all.A friend got married to a pshycho for no fault of hers’.

A couple whom we know, were not blessed with children. No fault of theirs’.But later adopted an orphan girl and changed her life for the good.

So I still stand confused and cannot conclude properly on what fate is.

Though thy has not fully handed over the control of our lives to us,he has not fully taken the     control from us. Some predetermined course exists, while some is left to our choice.   Ultimately our karma would matter. He has given us the cards to play.It depends on us how we play with it and win the race. Destiny stand not as a chance but a choice.Life is what we make of it.

So what about you..Do you believe in fate?
